What is this chud little creature?
In neuroscience, this creature is called a homunculus, which means âlittle man.â
A cortical homunculus is a visual model of various body parts drawn in distorted sizes to show how much of the brainâs cortex is devoted to communicating with different parts of the body.
The sensory model illustrates which parts of the body send sensory information to the brainâs somatosensory cortex. Usually, body parts such as fingers, hands, and face have higher densities of sensory receptors, allowing them to detect and distinguish sensory information with greater precision.
The motor model shows how much of the brainâs motor cortex, or the âcontrol towerâ for voluntary movement, is devoted to controlling different body parts. The larger a body part appears in the motor model, the more cortical representation it has in the motor cortex, reflecting greater precision and complexity in its voluntary movements.
Overall, both models show that the hands and facial features, including eyes, tongue, and lips, are highly specialized for detecting sensory information and performing precise voluntary movements.
So, at the end of the day, this weird little chud represents you, me, in fact, all of us!
